Ferran Altarriba Bertran is a designer and researcher in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. He currently works as a professor at the Escola Universitària ERAM (Girona, Catalonia), where he teaches courses related to design methodologies, research through creative practices, and interaction design, and leads the Playful Living Lab research laboratory. Previously, Ferran has worked as a researcher at internationally leading universities such as Tampere University (Finland), the University of California, Santa Cruz (United States of America), and the University of Southern Denmark (Denmark). He has also taught at other institutions including Kolding Designskolen (Denmark), the University of Eastern Finland (Finland), the University of Pretoria (South Africa), and the Estoril Higher Institute for Tourism and Hotel Studies (Portugal), among others. Throughout his career, primarily anchored in academia, Ferran has carried out numerous collaborations with industry partners, including both local organizations (e.g., elBulli Foundation, El Celler de Can Roca, Plat Institute, Jocs al Segon…) and international ones (e.g., Google, Sproutel...).
Ferran Altarriba Bertran holds a PhD in Computational Media from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Previously, he completed degrees in Audiovisuals and Multimedia and Interactive Design at the Universitat de Girona (Catalonia) and the University of Lincoln (UK). He also holds an MSc in IT Product Design from the University of Southern Denmark, where he specialized in participatory innovation. During these studies, Ferran completed shorter research stays at other institutions including Carnegie Mellon University (USA), PHL Hasselt (Belgium), and TU/e Eindhoven (the Netherlands).
Ferran’s research has been recognized with several distinctions, including: a Best Paper Award at the SIDeR 2016 conference, an Honorable Mention at the CHI 2021 conference, recognition by TIME magazine as one of the best innovations of 2021, an award for the most disruptive research within the Academy of Finland’s UNITE Flagship consortium (2022), and a Special Jury Award at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards (2022).

Ferran’s research is situated within the fields of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) (which bridges computational engineering with the social sciences, arts, and humanities) and Design Research (primarily anchored in the arts and humanities). He currently conducts this work as Associate Professor at the Universitat de les Arts ERAM, where he directs the Playful Living Lab (playful.eram.cat). He also maintains a close affiliation with the Gameful Futures Lab at Tampere University (Finland).
Ferran’s research is multidisciplinary and multifaceted: it has produced empirical contributions as well as new types of technological artefacts, methodological innovations, theoretical contributions, syntheses of existing literature, and proposals for new paradigms of thought. To date, he has a portfolio of more than 80 scientific publications, including journal articles, conference papers, and posters, among others. Both the conferences and journals in which he typically publishes are international and high-impact, generally Q1–Q2 in the case of journals and ranked between A++ and A- (GGS ranking) in the case of conferences — equivalent to high-impact journal publications, as recognized by AQU regulations for research evaluation in ICT engineering. In terms of metrics, Ferran’s scientific output has resulted in more than 1,500 citations (according to Google Scholar in early 2026), with an h-index of 23 and an i10-index of 45, figures that demonstrate the international impact of his work (see details on Google Scholar: bit.ly/ferranscholar).
A distinctive aspect of Ferran’s research is its collaborative nature. He regularly works with an extensive network of international researchers, reflected in co-authorship across more than 50 collaborators from institutions in over 20 countries and four different continents. This co-authorship includes researchers at different career stages, from full professors to students — not only doctoral students but also master’s and even undergraduate students. His research has also involved non-academic stakeholders such as companies, both local (e.g., Jocs al Segon, El Celler de Can Roca) and international (e.g., Google Research, Sproutel), private foundations (e.g., elBulli Foundation, Committee for Children, Fundació Alícia), and public institutions (e.g., Centre Cívic El Sortidor). This has enabled a significant portion of this research to receive external funding, including individual fellowships (e.g., La Caixa, 2016), industry-funded projects (e.g., Google, 2020–21), and competitive research projects (e.g., Academy of Finland UNITE Flagship, 2021–23).
Finally, an important part of Ferran’s contribution to the academic research community has been service in both international conferences and journals: he has served as a reviewer for more than 300 articles; he has been a member of program committees for conferences such as CHI (2021, 2023, 2024), DIS (2022, 2025), MindTrek (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025), CHI Play (2020), and PDC (2026); since 2023 he has been a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Food Design; he has co-led special issues of journals (International Journal of Gastronomy and Food Science, International Journal of Food Design, etc.); and he has held leadership roles in conferences, including Connections Chair (CHI Play 2024), General Chair (Halfway to the Future Symposium 2024), and Student Mentoring Program Chair (CHI 2026).
